When Peter confessed Him as the Christ, Jesus built His church on that revelation and promised the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Hell here is the place of the dead, so the promise is that death can no longer hold you. The thief that steals the seed of the kingdom is not the devil but ignorance, and ignorance steals the knowledge of your freedom. You do not overcome sin; you follow the One who already overcame it for you, and you refuse to make sin a bigger contender than your salvation.
